"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software": I had the
same problem {I use WXP Home Edition, SP2} until I did the following:
You can try this link first, just to check for windows updates:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp
Click on "Scan for updates"; HOWEVER, you may still have to do [some, all
of] the following to get v4 to work
One other thing you can do: go to this link, download and run mbsa.exe:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../mbsahome.mspx
(Do you have a 3rd-party-ZoneAlarm, McAfee, Norton,
e.g.-firewall/antivirus/privacy service program? If so, do the following; if
not, you probably either have a virus or spyware infection....you [anyone]
can email me direct at '' with system/software
specifics & I'll [try to] troubleshoot your specific problem.
Hope this helps:
1. "Tools":
a. “Internet Options">"General" tab: clear History
{personally, I have History [Days to keep] set at zero}; Delete files
(Offline content, too)
b. "Security" tab: "Trusted Sites" {uncheck
"Require...HTTPS...zone"}; Add "http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com",
"windowsupdate.microsoft.com", "microsoft.com"
c. "Privacy" tab: "Advanced">"Override automatic cookie
handling">"First-party Cookies"="Accept", check "Always allow session
cookies" (Third-party Cookies optional-personally I "Block" them); uncheck
“Block pop-ups" OR include b.'s "Trusted Sites" above in "Block pop-ups
settings Exceptions" list
d. "Advanced" tab: make sure the following is checked:
"Enable Install on Demand Internet Explorer", "Enable
Install on Demand (other)", "Enable offline items to be synchronized on a
schedule"
Click "Apply" {"OK"}
2. "Tools": {possibly most important, especially if you have 3rd-party
Browser Helper Objects [BHOs], Browser Extensions [BXs], &/or similar ActiveX
Controls [OCXs]}
a. "Manage Add-ons">"Show: Add-ons currently loaded in Internet Explorer";
highlight any & all Microsoft BHOs, BXs, OCXs-Enable & update them via
"Settings" & "Updates"; highlight 3rd-party BHOs, BXs, OCXs-Disable them
one-by-one (you can either test Windows Update after each one or after
disabling all of them; 2 that are safe to leave enabled are "AcroIEHlprObj
Class [Adobe] & "SpywareGuardDLBLOCK.CBrowserHelper" [Javacool]-latest
version. THE 2 THAT STOPPED ME WERE McAfee's [Internet Security Suite
6-updated thru today's date] Privacy Bar's BX "GDIEHELP.DLL" & McAfee's
Privacy Service's BHO "GDIEHELP.DLL"
Don’t forget to re-enable all 3rd-party BHOs, BXs, AND OCXs that you know
what they are and why/how they are/got there. Use Google, Yahoo!, etc.
search engine[s] to find out info about those you are not sure about!
Sorry about the drawn-out instructions: you may not need to do all of the
above; you may need to do more {hopefully not}; most of the above is shown in
other threads-just not all [actually, MOST] of it in one place. I have not
included specific error (e.g. Error number: 0x80072F76) threads/solutions:
this is strictly for the "Checking for the latest version of the Windows
Update software": page 'freezing' up. If I find out that there's other
pertinent instruction/info, I'll post it.
