Hello,

I'm trying to fix my uncles computer which he did not update windows for a
VERY long time. I try to go to windows update, and it get stuck on the
screen...

"checking for latest version of windows update software" I can progress
past this part only in safe mode, but I believe window can not update in safe
mode.

I know this computer has some massive problems...

1. He did not have a anti virus updated, I ran a virus scan and removed 25
viruses.
2. Tons of spyware and adware I removed.
3. Zonealarm does not start, only starts in safe mode properly.

Please help, I don't know what to do anymore.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Windows Update Checklist

What version of Windows? I'll assume WinXP. Don't know about ZoneAlarm.

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you see the
0x8007043B error
This error may occur if the WUAUSERV and BITS services are not configured properly in
the registry.

or

Try registering the following:

Click Start, select Run and type (pressing enter after each one and wait for the
success message):

net.exe stop wuauserv
Press Ok

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll

net.exe start wuauserv

SUGGESTION 1:
==============
This issue can be caused if one or more of the following services are disabled or
unavailable. We will therefore RESET the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and
the Automatic Updates service. For this, please follow the steps given below:

1. Click Start --> select Run. In the Run box, type services.msc, Click OK.
2. Find the Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Right-click on it and select
Properties.

3. Click on Stop and then again click on Start. In the Startup Type list, make sure
that "Automatic" is selected. Click OK.
4. Similarly find Automatic Updates service. Right-click on it and select Properties.

5. Click on Stop and then again click on Start. In the Startup Type list, make sure
that "Automatic" is selected. Click OK.
6. Close the Services window.

[Please note that if the service is already started the "Start" button will be grayed
out. In this case "Stop" the service and then "Start" it again. On the other hand if
the service is not running, the "Stop" button will be grayed out. In this case
"Start" the service]

If the issue persists, please continue to the next:

SUGGESTION 2:
=============
This issue can also occur due to some corrupt ActiveX Control files. Let us register
the following files using the Regsvr32 command and check whether the issue is
resolved. Please note, there is a space between Regsvr32 and the file name.

1. Close all instances of Internet Explorer.
2. Click Start and Run, type Regsvr32 wuapi.dll in the Open box and click OK. The
same steps to register the following files:
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL
REGSVR32 JSCRIPT.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL
REGSVR32 SOFTPUB.DLL

================
end of Microsoft's solution.
