windows update freezes when I click custom or express

Ive got a problem with windows update when I press either custom or express
the page freezes I cannot use the mouse or keyboard my only way of escape is
pressing reset on computer tower on looking in windows update log theres a
start error 80072ee7 and after telling me of the warnings which I cant
decipher ends in error 0x8024402c.
I have a AMD athlon (tm) 64 processor 3200+ with windows xp SP2 also WI-FI
with netgear my two other computers connect to windows update and work fine I
do experience unusual behavour when opening help and support though ive got a
connection to to the internet and click keep my computer up to date with
windows update get a message saying I need an internet connect though I have
it already if I use the aol software and sign on it will connect me to the
update page but still freezes when clicking custom or express.
Any help would be most appreciated

yes I have NVIDIA GE FORCE 6600
