Windows update freezes computer

Auto Update wants to (daily) download and install Q835732 but it is already
on my Windows XP computer. The Express Install page says it is a critical
update with this notation: "Total updates selected: 1 items, 0 KB, 0
minutes". But when I try to download and install Q835732 it freezes the
computer and I must reboot. SP2 is installed with this notation: [See
Q329115 for more information]. If I ignore the Auto Update request the
computer generally runs OK but I continue to get multiple requests to
download and install Q835732. Have run anti-spyware and anti-virus but they
show no problems.

KB835732 is included in SP2 so the update should not be offered from
Windows Update. Did you delete anything from the
Program Files\NetMeeting folder or is NetMeeting not located in the
Program Files folder ?

NetMeeting *is* in Program Files and I have never (knowingly) deleted
anything from Program Files. However, I did experience a virus about two
months ago and had to have the hard drive wiped clean. The person (an
"expert" who owns his own computer shop) who wiped my drive also re-installed
Windows XP and SP2. Perhaps he didn't do a very thorough job! Would
re-installing WindowsXP over the current one solve this problem?

You're welcome ... Hmmm ... perhaps all the files for NetMeeting are not
in it's folder.
Let's take a look see ... show hidden files, folders, and system files :
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Then navigate to the NetMeeting folder and compare the version of these
files by right clicking them and then choosing Properties :

Callcont.dll
Mst120.dll
nmcom.dll

The correct version for SP2 is 5.1.2600.2180 for all 3. If they are
located in the NetMeeting folder than you will have to check the rest of
the files from the update vs. the files currently on the system.

Under the General Information heading click the plus sign next to
Security Update Information. Now click the plus sign next to
Windows XP (all versions). If XP SP1 was installed, check that file list
vs. what's on the system. If XP, never updated with any Service Packs,
compare with those files.
All files on an XP SP2 system should be at version 5.1.2600.2180 or higher.

The quickest way to ensure that all system files are intact and in their
proper version would be to run sfc /scannow. Since SP2 is installed then
you would have to slipstream SP2 with the original XP CD to be able to
use sfc /scannow. If you have the original XP CD and SP2 on hand then
I'll post a link to slipstreaming. If not ...

Did you get that information from going to Start, Run, and typing in
winver ?
The reason I ask is that it's not showing SP2 installed and the file
version you posted for callcont.dll, Mst120.dll, and nmcom.dll show that
file versions were for a pre-SP1 system. The files should be at version
5.1.2600.2180 if SP2 was installed correctly.

Yes, that's how I got the information.

Have ordered the cd of SP2 and will install (as you suggest below) when
received. Will report back here when that is done to let you know if it
fixes my problem.

Should I leave all those Hotfix files alone (listed in Add or Remove
Programs) or should I remove them?

You're welcome. Leave the updates on the system. This way it will be
protected until SP2 is installed.
KB835732 was problematic for folks who had either deleted files from the
NetMeeting folder or had even deleted the entire folder. That's why we
started there.
Not sure exactly what the "tech" did in botching the SP2 installation,
though.
