Windows Update freezes IE

Windows Update freezes IE.
I just installed a new Motherboard,[ASUS A8N-SLI DELUXE] and had to do a
"repair installation" of windows XP Pro, now I have to get all the
updates and service packs, and when I go to either
Http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
or
Http://update.microsoft.com/microsof....aspx?ln=en-us
IE just freezes.
On another computer, which hasn't been used or updated for a month or
so, I can go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/, and see the
updates with no problem.
Do I have to do a clean install of windows, or can this be fixed?
I just had to get a new Key from Microsoft, at great effort, because my
key had been used too many times [by me, on this machine], so I am
hesitant about doing a clean install.
Any ideas?

Could be the firewall preventing access to WU, the installed Antivirus
preventing the ActiveX installation, or a scripting issue.
Check the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory (folder)
for error codes. Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries
and post back with the section that recorded the last attempt to access WU.
