Windows Update freezing

Hi all,
I have a Windows 2000 server and the windows update page keeps on freezing
when trying to update. Even downloading the update directly on the machine
and trying to install it does not work. It just sits there forever.

After reading this forum a lil bit more, I looked at the BITS service and it
will not start. The net start command does not help either. I've searched
back through these archives and it looks like most of the BITS issues seemed
to be geared towards XP.

What should be my next step? Thanks,

from a command prompt type "net start bits"
what is the output?

is there any related information in the system event log?

also, post the related part containg error in the windowsupdate.log .

(start / run / and type %windir%\windowsupdate.log)

Thanks for the quick reply. I already tried the net start bits and the
machine just sits there with the cursor blinking on the next line and looks
like it it is hung.

You have wrong permissions set in your machine, type
start/run/Regedt32.exe, and check the permissions in the following
registry key,
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate

Give administrator and system full control,
