Did you auto install "KB936357"
This is a reliability update. Install this microcode update to improve the reliability of
systems with Intel processors
If you did, see if removing the update fixes the problem.
Just a suggestion.

| Hello. I've got a Sony Vaio and Windows XP Home Edition. After installing
| July's Windows Update, Windows only reaches the loading bar screen on the
| next boot-up. The only way to have the notebook running is by booting it into
| Safe Mode, then restarting Windows in its normal mode.
|
| I've tried restoring the system to an earlier date but it hasn't worked out
| the whole issue, simply because when the notebook tries to restart, the
| original problem is there again: the system cannot progress further than the
| loading blue bar screen. I haven´t installed any software other than the
| Windows Update that is downloaded automatically.
|
| PLEASE, HELP!!!!
|
| THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH!
