I'm using Windows ME and just recently reformatted my hard drive. The Windows
Update used to work before I reformatted. Now the screen freezes at "Checking
for the latest version of the Windows Update software...". Here's my

Could be your firewall stopping it I don't see any errors messages in the
log file

I thought so as well but, I turned my firewall off completely, tried Windows
Update again and nothing. I also checked all my active X permissions and even
tried a few of the troubleshooting tips to no avail.

If you just reformated the drive and can't use update you must have the old
version (iuengine.dll version: 5.3.3790.13)
of IE. If you do I would suggest going to the download site and get the IE
sp1 + all the updates and try again.
