[Error number: 0x80070424]
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem

I contacted MS and they said they would get back to me within 24 hrs. That
was 48 hrs. ago.

I'm trying to install the "CRITICAL" updates.

Whazzup????

Dave, thanks for the reply. I ran the patch, but to no avail. I still get
the same error message when attempting to update.

OK well it was worth a shot.

0x80070424 = 'The specified service does not exist as an installed service.'
if that helps you.

Weird...

I've been having some trouble with IE6 for a while now. Something must be
buggered up. Still waiting to hear back from MS support.

Thanks so much for trying to help me out.

This can be caused if you have recently reinstalled XP from your original
disk prior to SP1. To fix open regedt32 and change the following value:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Windows
double click 'CSDVersion' and change the value to 0 (Zero)
Restart and Windows Update will work again.

I heard back from MS support last night. Here's their fix that worked:

Suggestion 1. Restore two registry branches.
=================================
The relevant registry branches are as follows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\R oot\LEGACY_WUAUSERV

Please refer to the following steps to restore them:

1. Click Start->Run, type: Inf and press Enter.
2. Locate the file "au.inf" (without quotations) in the opened folder (you
may type au to locate this file), right click on the file and choose
"Install".

3. When you are prompted to select the installation source, click browse,
and navigate to the location:

C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386

If this folder is not available in the system, please choose the folder
C:\Windows\System32 instead.
