Windows Update/Genuine Advantage Validation Tool

I know for a fact that I've authenticated my XP at some point in the last year.

However, I can't install the latest security update(s) unless I "upgrade
some of its components", i.e. GAV Tool. Yet at
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/dow...Question7Label
I read that "Regardless of genuine status, users will not be denied access to
critical security updates".

Could someone explain this please?

Critical security updates will be available by background Automatic Update
regardless of whether the system has passed the WGA validation test.

The manual Windows Update or Microsoft Update site will work only after the
latest updates of WGA validation have been downloaded and installed. The
WGA validation software is updated and re-issued quite frequently.

Bsaicly I have the same problem as Andy; I want to know why WGS does not
install, And how to get it installed.

Same here! No answers have ben forthcoming from MS on why folks are getting
installation failures (Error Code: 0x80242006 ). I anxciously await some
peep out of Redmond.

Why is it that I can not install the latest WGA? My windows XP is genuine on
a Dell machine.

If you get error 80242006 from update 905474, please download and install:

http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...d496154544.exe

Then re-boot Windows. Does this solve your problem?

This is a link to a later version of 905474 than currently offered by
Windows Update. Windows Update History will not include a record of this
manual installation, although earlier installation attempts for 905474 will
remain in History. The effect of installing this version manually is that
Windows Update will not offer 905474 again until the version offered by
Windows Update is more recent than this one.
