Windows Update gets stuck while installing

Hi,

I have Windows Vista Home Premium with SP1 and I have configured Windows
Update to ask me if I allow it to download and install updates.

The problem is that, whenever one of the following updates is downloaded
(KB890830 March 2009, KB960353, KB951847), WU starts installing it but gets
stuck in 0% for all eternity (except when installing KB951847, here it gets
stuck always at 20%).

I have already tried to install them manually by downloading them from
www.microsoft.com but the result is the same as above. No progress, no error
message, and this goes on and on.

I have left the computer turned on for more than 24 hours and it doesn't
matter.

So, I'm desperate because I can't install most of the updates.

Hello Argenzul,

Clearing Temporary Internet files, cookies and history in Internet Explorer

Tools>Internet Options>General
You’ll see Delete Cookies, Delete files, Delete History "Delete all offline
content

Reboot and try Windows Update again.

Best and easier to use CCleaner. <http://www.ccleaner.com>

Did your computer come with Vista SP1 preinstalled, did you install SP1 via
Windows Update, or did you choose to manually install SP1?

Assuming SP1 had not been offered by Windows Update, briefly see...

The update is not installed successfully, you receive a message, and the
computer restarts when you try to install an update in Windows Vista:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358

The see...

A software update is available for the Windows Vista installation software
feature:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937287

....and attempt to install it manually, too.

Unlimited installation and compatibility support for Vista SP1 is available
at no charge *but only through 18 March 2009* (i.e., tomorrow)!!

According to the list of all the updates that I have currently installed, I
have every update mentioned in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937287.
Looking at the date of installation, I can see that most of them were
installed before SP1 and the others were installed with it.

In addition, I have not suffered the symptoms mentioned in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358.

Is "Update for Windows Vista (KB937287)" itself also installed?

I believe you may be suffering from the symptoms mentioned in KB949358.
(Don't take the subject or content too literally.)

If and only if the problem started immediately after you installed SP1
manually, open a free SP1 support incident *immediately*! Today is the last
day such support will be available. See links in my previous reply.

If the problem did *not* start immediately after installing SP1 manually,
open a free Windows Update support incident:

Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...spx?gprid=6527

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft
subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with
security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related
to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB999999).

If your problem relates to a Cumulative Security Update for IE, call the
above number and ask to be transferred to the "Consumer IE queue" (which is
47830).

Support for Windows Update:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/wusupport

For more information about how to contact your local Microsoft subsidiary
for security update support issues, visit the International Support Web
site: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.
