Windows update getting lazy

Just today I found there was an update to Silverlight via accidently
stumbling accross it on the microsoft.com website. Was nothing on Windows
Update!
Also noticed last time Windows Live Messenger had a big version upgrade it
wasn't on WU. Had to find out about it by chance and update this manually.

How many other programs are not on WU? How many people are using old out of
date software because windows update has not detected it or hasn't notified
them of a new version?

Getting lazy? Windows Update supporting Beta software? Working with
Microsoft Connect? Covering all Microsoft and partner software properly?

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.

How many people out there are running old out of date soffware? WU seems
alright at distributing updates and fixes but not new versions of software.

Optional Software Updates - you have to do a CUSTOM search/scan for updates
and choose "Optional Software Updates" from the left side menu at
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ - and that is only if you have updated
to Microsoft Updates vs. Windows Updates.

People who don't check manually and/or have not moved to Microsoft Updates
as opposed to Windows Updates. Although - most of those people likely do
not have any software they would need to update anyway. You chose to
install the extras - so you should expect to have to maintain them a bit...

Is your default update source Windows Update or Microsoft Update? See

Didn't come up in the optional updates when I did it manually. Same as when
I was using an old version of WLM a while back... Had to do it all manually
after getting curious and checking...

Hmmmm

Yes, it is set to recieve updates from Microsoft Update.

The odd error where it doesn't detect that I'm using an old version?

Was Vista SP1 installed on your machine when you bought it, did you install
SP1 via Windows Update, or did you install SP1 manually?

Did you opt to be offered beta updates?

If you're currently running Silverlight v1.0, I'd stick with it IIWY.

And I would not rely on MU for Windows Live updates. If a newer version of
a Windows Live app is available, uninstall your current version then install
the new one manually.

I did a clean install of windows vista then immediatly ran the stand-alone
package of SP1.

Not sure why some microsoft products aren't updated via WU. Perhaps WU is
not detecting their versions or perhaps doesn't bother about minor version
upgrades.

I don't know what WU looks at and has in its database.

I would not recommend installing SP1 manually unless and until it's offered
by Windows Update.

I have two suggestions:

1. Uninstall SP1 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948537) & reboot twice,
then don't install SP1 again unless and until it's offered by Windows
Update; or...

2. Start a free support incident:

Unlimited installation and compatibility support for Vista SP1 is available
at no charge through 18 Mar-09
• US:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...4&gprid=500921

• CA:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...4&gprid=500921

• UK:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...4&gprid=500921

• AU:
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...4&gprid=500921

• Other: http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx | select Windows
Vista | select Windows Vista Service Pack 1
