Windows Update Goes Blank

I have a problem with Microsoft Update. This has either occurred after
installing IE8 or could be due to a little viral problem I had about the same
time. When I press “start” then “Microsoft Update” the update window appears
and says it is connecting to the update site. But the word “done” appears
after a short time in the bottom left hand side of the screen and the page
remains blank.
I also can not download attachments from Yahoo Mail and other sites go blank
(e.g. Facebook after log-on etc).
Try all with Firefox and there is no problem.
(Had Mosucker.AA on the machine as well as files in c:\windows\system32 such
as “server.exe” and “updater.exe” which are now removed).

Anyone got any ideas?

"Blank" pages may be symptoms of overly strong security settings.
Use Default Level security settings.

Use View, Source to check for this possibility. (E.g. in IE press Alt-V,c)
Doing that may show you some script which would normally effect a
redirect. If you like you can decipher and extract the URL which the
redirect would have requested and make the same request manually.

Good luck

There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware
infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2. [WinXP ONLY!! =>] Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan
(only!) in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
