How do I get the Windows update back so that I can install the updates? The
normal icons are gone and all the instructions reference the windows update
icons.

Click Start, Run. In the Run box, type "regedit" without the quotes and click "OK"
Work your way to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer
In the right pane, locate the entry : NoWindowsUpdate And make sure it is set to 0 (Zero)

If the entry is missing, choose Edit, New, Binary value. Name the new entry NoWindowsUpdate.
Press Enter and set the value to 0 (Zero)

Click on OK, close the Registry Editor, and restart to make the change take effect.
