Peter, I was having the same problem after upgrading to SP2. I was able to
fix this by making a change in the Registry as follows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Win dows\WindowsUpdate\AU
Look for "AUOptions" entry in the above path. The value needs to be "5" to
allow administrator (you) to control the settings for Auto Update.
Apparently, during upgrade, the value is set based on your response to how
you want Auto Update to work and once it is set, you are not allowed a way to
change it. This all ties to a system policy template named WUAU.adm. I
worked for the better part of last week trying to figure this one out. Hope
this helps. As usual, be careful when editing the registry and make backups
1st.
