I am experiencing similar problems that seem to be related to other problems.
I started having problems shutting down xp sp2 last week. I went to windows
update and IE6 hangs before I even get there. All of the windows update
settings (control panel "windows update", "security center") would also hang.
Trying to start and stop Windows Update in "services.msc" also seems to have
problems. I reset IE using the cmd "rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection
DefaultInstall 132 %systemroot%\inf\au.infand" and was able to access windows
update but it would not register me; I would either get one of two errors:
0x80240036 or 0x80070420. Neither of these are listed in the Windows Update
Troubleshooter Solutions. None of my other MS apps can update either (e.g.
MS anti-spyware, office 2003). After a couple of restarts, IE begins hanging
again. I have a pretty secure home network network, but I am afraid there is
a very smart virus/spyware that is able to bypass eTrust AV, and MS
anti-spyware (especially since windows update won't work). It may be
unrelated, but msi.exe (3.1) is initiated at startup and must be ended before
I can remove programs from Add/Remove Programs. Does anyone have any
suggestions?
