Windows Update hangs on 'looking for available updates'

Hello:

Each time I go to Windows Update and tell it to check for
critical updates, it hangs on the screen that says:

Windows Update is looking for available updates...

I get the green bar floating across the page, and it keeps
doing this for a very long time, until I have to close the
page down. I have not been successful in getting Windows
Update to work at the microsoft.com site.

I am using Windows XP (not XP Pro).

Any ideas? Thanks!
