Windows Update Hangs - no error message

Running XP Professional I just had to repair my installation using the
"Upgrade" installation. All settings and data are fine however I cannot run
Windows Update. When I am redirected to the web site I sit at the "Checking
for the latest version of the Windows Update software..." screen and never
get a listing of available updates. The "Install updates", "View
installation history" and "Restore hidden updates" are greyed out.

I have manually applied SP1a and that made no difference. I've tried
everything I could find on the KB but nothing has worked. The error is
exactly as described in KB836960 however I am not running Zone Alarm or any
other firewall. My other computers work fine through my DSL router/firewall
(so did this one until this week).

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Was able to fix this problem finally by using Knowledge
Base article KB836974.

Well I thought it worked, but it just sent me to install
a new version of the windows update software and now I am
back to the original problem again.

I am no computer genius, but here's what I tried.....Iwas having the same
problem as you were (hung at the "Checling for the latest version of the
Windows Update Software"). Although I still have not been able to download
SP2 yet, I was able to get other updates by holding down doing the following:
While hung at the above mentioned window, hold down the ctrl key and click on
the 'back' button. Keep holding down the ctrl key while the page loads. When
I let go of the ctrl key, windows update now checked for available updates.
This won't get you SP2, but it should get you any other updates out there.
By the way, I have my system set to automatically update, as windows seems to
have mandated in order to get SP2, but it's been days and I still have not
received it. Hope this was somewhat helpful.
