Windows update hangs on registering files

I am having a problem getting the security updates from Microsoft. I am
running W2k SP 4. I click start - windows update and click on the express
button. I get this error message:

Red X - Files required to use windows update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer.

I select register or install the files for me now and click continue.

Downloading and install the latest updating software screen comes up and it
starts to register. When it gets to 100% it just hangs there. Here's my
windows update log file:

I right click my computer and go manage. I click the + next to services and
I get this message: Error connecting to <computer name> the system cannot
find the path specified. Do you wish to continue to attempt to connect to it
in the future? I click yes. Then click services. Double click Automatic
Updates. Startup type is automatic. Service status is stopped. I click start
to start the service - Could not start the Automatic updates service on
local computer. Error 3228369023. I then go to a command prompt type in net
start wuauserv. I get this error message: A system error has occurred.
System error 127. The specified procedure could not be found.

I deleted the windows installer 3.1. rebooted then downloaded the windows
installer 3.1 and installed it. Rebooted then downloaded and installed BITS
2.0 and HTTP 5.1 as I have seen on the Internet. Went to windows update and
it still hangs on the registering 100%.

Can anyone please help me try to get this computer fixed

Thanks in advance.

I downloaded, installed and scanned with MSRT - didn't find anything. Tried
to scan with onecare live but I just kept getting this error
message0x08402405 even in safe mode. So I didn't bother trying to figure
that out. I installed spybot and scanned only found cookies. tried
installing Adaware but got this message - The windows installer service
could not be accessed. This can happen if your running in safe mode or the
windows installer not correctly installed. I downloaded AVG Anti virus free
version and when I went to install told me I didn't have a compatible OS. I
needed at least W2K SP4 SR 1. So I downloaded this SR1 and installed it.
After computer restarted I tried Automatic updates and it work fine. Was
able to download all security updates. Still had the Windows installer error
message when I tried to install Adaware again. Need to fix that problem.

Thanks for your help. Problem solved.

And how many updates were offered? Did all of them install successfully?
Is Automatic Updates enabled now?

<QP>
Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 [originally released on June 28, 2005
and updated on September 13, 2005 to a v2 release] makes it easier for
customers to enhance and maintain the security and stability of their
Windows 2000-based computers.

QED: Why wasn't Win2K SP4 SR1 installed 3 years ago?

QED: Why hadn't an anti-virus application been installed all along? [AVG
was not your best choice, even amongst free AVs, IMHO.]

I suspect there are /lots/ of problems that need fixing on that box: See
Step #3 in my original reply.
