How did you reinstall Windows 2000. From scratch (re-format, install, ...)
or did you use the Repair option?
Did you apply all the Service Packs? Service Pack 4?
What IE did you install IE6? Windows 2000 came with IE5.5 I believe.

I am experiencing the same problem. Clean Windows 2000 Pro install from the
Dell reinstallation disk, manually installed Service Pack 4 and Rollup of
newer security fixes. I have manually installed additional security patches
that I took from the Win2K download area at Microsoft.

I have run Microsoft Updates (different from Windows Update??) and after 15
to 20 minutes I have received an error message. I cleared the IE cache,
cleared all cookies and tried again, with the same results. So I cleared it
all again, and tried again.

NOW, as I am composing this it has finally given me the results that I
expected. It is installing 36 updates... It's taken about 20 minutes to reach
this point on the third try where I haven't manually terminated the
application.

I have had this problem for the past two days on numerous occasions and
killed the application in Task Master, because I believed it to be hung. It
appears now that I wasn't patient enough and until this afternoon when I
decided to just let it run I must have been terminating the activity before
it was completed. But it took a lot longer time than I have been experiencing
with my other pc's running WinXPPro.

Patience has its virtues...

Have installation of server 2k, running IE6, trying to run windows updates
hangs IE6. terminating the processusing task manager then does something to
IE that prevents it from ever being able to access microsoft updates again.
Reinstalling IE 6 service pack 1 gets me back but trying to run microsoft
updates locks up the browser and puts me back in the same circle. Has anyone
figured a way out of this?
