XP Home SP1

Windows Update hangs
Checking for the latest Windows Update Software...
(which is already installed).

Hangs for ever, over and over.

and following suggestions from other newsgroups
posts, I NET STOP wuauserv

and then register some DLL's before restarting.

I have a problem with 2 of the 6 dll's.

regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regcltui.dll

both generate similar error. eg...
DllRegisterServer wuapi.dll failed
Return Code was: 0x80070005

Date on the files: 08/03/2004 which is same on me SP2 system

How do I find the problem?

Carl

Did you try poster's hixcks tip about doing these repairs in safe mode?
Also note some of the links that I gave him/her before that discovery
was made.

Can you try the following in a command prompt and go to the Windows Update
website again?

regsvr32.exe %windir%\system32\atl.dll
