For several days my Windows Update hangs at the "searching for updates..."
Screen. I am running XP/SP2 - the only strange thing I see in
windowsupdate.log i a section like this:

Is there someone out there to help me out? :-)

What was wrong with the suggestions given in this thread?

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...e-da8753d6a537

(web interface search for
0x8024001b MSFT
)

Note that the code means
http://docxp.mvps.org/WU5-ERR.htm
<quote>
0x8024001B -2145124325 WU E SELFUPDATE IN PROGRESS self-update in progress

</quote>

(MSN search for
(8024001b OR 0x8024001b)
)

So I think that the suggestions given by both Maurice and Sudheer
would be relevant to your case too.

Notice also that the OP did not respond further, making it more likely that
the problem was resolved. (Typically we assume that "no news is good news.")

Good luck

THX Robert,

But I already tried those suggestions. But I can't stop WUAUSERV (near the
end of the suggestion list). What happens:

Keyin: net stop wuauserv
Says: Automatic Updates are terminating (*I* translated this from GE to EN).
Then: Dot-Dot-Dot-Dot......
Then: Automatic Updates could not terminate

No other Error-Message (Error-Number or whatever)...?

So, in fact, then, the suggestion *did* help you.
You have discovered another (possibly even worse) symptom
with which to refine your problem description. <eg>

Actually, the point of stopping the service is secondary to the instruction
which comes next, which in this case I think was clearing part of the
SoftwareDistribution folder. E.g. stopping the service is intended to
ensure that the other instruction can be done cleanly.

You could do that by not starting the service at all on your next boot
(e.g. by using a "safe" boot which prevents non-essential drivers and
services from loading or starting.)

BTW while you're there I think it might be a good idea to do some of
the WU .dll re-registration you can see suggested in other threads.
In order to do them it is even more important to stop the service
before issuing the regsvr32 commands. E.g. here is a list of them
which the troubleshooter suggests:

http://update.microsoft.com/microsof...n=en&IsMu=True

(Found by searching for regsvr32 wuaueng
since wuaueng.dll has been a problem source in the past.
In fact in one incident the only way a user was able to re-register it
was by doing a safe boot, even though as far as we know
he was able to stop the service.)

Good luck

Robert

BINGO! I'm back on the track again! Right now I am downloading quite a
couple of things I missed in the past few weeks.

You get a free beer, next time you step into Switzerland :-)
