APOLOGIES FOR CROSSPOSTING MS/PUB/WINDOWSUPDATE

Folk:

Recently had a malware problem; on of its effects apparently was to remove
my IE7/XPPro system's ability to go to the Microsoft Update site. Every
time I try I get the Google equivalent of a 404. I had the same problem
with my ZoneAlarm update service, and fixed it by putting some update server
info in the Hosts file. Will the same procedure work here, and if so, what
is the info?

Working around a malware infection to try to obtain updates from Microsoft
Update won't solve your malware problem, and the fix you used for an
unfortunate conflict amongst legitimate software products is a far cry from
the steps that may be required to remediate issues caused by malicious
software.

My suggestion for correct remediation procedures for *infected* machines is
to review the well-researched documentation available from the major
vendors, and either use their tools (if available), or follow their
instructions exactly.

Used PreVx and MRT successfully.

Neither reports any malware present.

Enc of story?

You were told exactly the same as Lawrence Garvin did by another MS MVP in another
newsgroup. Yet you gave the same answer as you did here at a much earlier posting
time as your original post in this newsgroup. As so, I do consider you a troll and
one that multiposts. <plonk>

Whether Peter has misunderstood your intent, or not, is beside the point,
but I will say that if you received an *answer* in another newsgroup, and
then RE-posted the question in another newsgroup, simply because you didn't
like the answer previously received -- then I fully understand Peter's
annoyance.

Frankly, I'm a bit annoyed too if the case is that you wasted my time
responding to your post, when you'd already been told essentially the same
thing by another MVP.
