Windows update icon no longer active

I just downloaded and installed IE7 today; IE7 seems to work OK, but the
windows update icon (start->control panel->automatic updates) is no longer
active - double clicking it returns nothing. The same action with IE7
tools->windows update.
Also from the windows update web page, activeX information bar does not
appear.
It may not be related to IE7 installation, but what causes?
