Windows update ingores user input

I am trying to install updated network drivers for a DELL Inspiron 6400
laptop running a clean install of Vista Home premium.

The problem is that the driver update program seems to enter some kind of
"race" condition when the network card is brought down while the windows
update process is downloading updates.

Since I found no way to cancel the download, I have to wait for it to finish.

If I had to suggest an improvement: don't assume "Microsoft knows best."

Wait - let me make sure I understood what you just said...

You are essentially disabling the network card n the middle of updates?

Or - you are trying to install drivers for your non-Microsoft network card
from *Microsoft* and not those who actually created and support your
hardware device? (I suggest *not* doing that - get your hardware device
drivers from the hardware device manufacturer - always. They made it, they
support it.)
