Windows update installation problem

Automatic updates tried installing and update. it said " windows is
installing, do not turn off computer" < the battery went on me and every time
i close down my computer it says "windoes installing updates". THe problem is
iv left it on over night and the next morning its doing the same. Im not able
to shut my laptop down wthout keeping my finger on the power button and i
dont really want to rebuild it.

help much apprecuated.

Perhaps a System Restore or a Last Known Good Configuration.
