The motherboard was replaced on the computer, which necessitated reparing the
Windows installtaion with the XP Pro SP2 installtaion CD. Now it needs to
install about 100 updates. It has downloaded the files, and it tries the
install but keeps failing. I've tried reinstalling Windows Installer 3.1. I
reinstalled .net framework 2.0. I've seen requests here for a log file.
Hopefully this is the login info needed for someone to offer a suggestions. I
appreciate any help in solving this issue. Thanks, and here is the log info
from %windir%\kb893803v2.log:

Any Google/Newsgroup searches for your problem before asking? I only ask
because this newsgroup is over-flowing with the following answer ( I know -
I have posted it many times myself... ;-) ):

The key here (corrected for typos):
"repairing the Windows installation with the XP Pro SP2 installation CD"

In other words - you performed a repair install and now you can download but
not install the Windows XP updates in any shape or form. Google would
likely lead you to this:

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update,
from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after
you repair a Windows XP installation
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

(Try it even if you did a clean, not repair, installation.)
(Try it even if you performed some sort of restore - not repair install.)
(Try it even if you did an upgrade installation.)
(Try even if you think none of that fits...)

Do all suggested methods. Hope that helps!

(Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and do a custom scan after each
method/reboot.)

Hope that helps you out!

Thanks for all the help Shenan. It was late at night and I had only tried
using the search field in the forum...I should have known to google it
instead!
The solution worked great!
