[very sorry about re-posting this again but this is a serious issue and i
need help asap. Thx]
NewScience, thanks a million for the pointer to EVENTVWR.MSC, it's a gold
mine.

1) Control Panel | Automatic Updates is grayed out.

I turned off Auto Update quite awhile ago -- because Windows Update kept
spamming me with pop-ups every day saying "updates are available" only to
click on the pop-up and find out the only "update available" was SP2.

2) EVENTVWR.MSC shows Microsoft is indeed trying to install SP2 as of Oct 11
'06.

In fact, the Applications log says SP2 is already installed. I see in
Control Panel / Add/Remove programs that Windows Update even de-installed
every single SP1 fix I had. it's now trying to install a new vsn of .NET as
well.

Microsoft is *really* crossing the line here in forcing its desires onto
users. This is terrible. I've had my computer on Stand By instead of shutting
down for ~2 wks since that msg started. I do not want SP2 installing until I
create a bootable mirror-image of my entire SP1 hard drive onto another hard
drive. Heard too much about blue-screening and about SP1 programs not working
on SP2, too much risk w/o a complete backup. I have most files backed up, but
not programs.

Will System Restore work to back out this SP2 install? Any better
recommendations or other things to check?

Thanks again.
