I have just rebuilt my desktop PC, let the Microsoft update download and
install the latest Microsoft update detection software then restarted my
desktop PC. Now when I go to perform a Microsoft update for either express
or custom, I get no response and the desktop locks up. On the top of the
browser it shows that the IE is not responding and I have to perform a hard
restart to unlock the desktop. No error msgs. in event viewer. How can I
fix this problem? Thank you for your help

Ruben

I have the same problem. IE locks up when I try to manually scan for updates
and when I try to download Defender. I have to do a hard restart also. I'm
running legal and genuine XP Home + SP2 and all the latest updates, I can get
updates automatically. I do not have any HP software. My product key is
correct and the WAG validation result says genuine. How can I fix this
problem?

When I click on the Express or Custom,
I get the rolling progress bars... and some disk & Ethernet activity,
but it just stalls....
