Windows Update Issue Partly Solved

I notice a lot of people having problems with Windows Update after SP2. I
was too - no error message, just getting a blank page.

Eventually discovered that for some reason, when I click on Windows Update
from the Start menu or go to it from MS site, it
takes me to http:// ... it should be https://... adding in the s solves
the problem but I have to do it every time.

Anyone know the reason why I am going to http:// ... by default?

You can make yourself a internet shortcut with the https
and use that. Goto to win update ( https) site then in IE
menu
file\send\shortcut to desktop, it should store the https
address.

I would like to see the containt of wuredir.xml if you
have it .

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\WuRedir\9482F44-E343-43B-
B10-9A65C822C77\wuredir.xml

you can use notepad to open it.

Looks normal.
Are you using IE or Netscape or an other browser ?

(HTTPS) A variant of HTTP used by Netscape for handling
secure transactions.

The Netscape Navigator supports a URL access
method, "https", for connecting to HTTP servers using SSL.

"https" is a unique protocol that is simply SSL underneath
HTTP. You need to use "https://" for HTTP URLs with SSL,
whereas you continue to use "http://" for HTTP URLs
without SSL. The default "https" port number is 443, as
assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority.
SSL is for
Secure Sockets Layer

if you save the new address to your favorites and send to your desktop you
shouldn't have to do it everytime.

Try this

When you try to access the Windows Update Site, a blank
page opens.

Register Jscript.dll
Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type regsvr32 jscript.dll.
Click OK.

Makes no difference.

Some other info, don't know if it's relevant:

When I go to https:// ... the Security Warning about secure and nonsecure
items pops up, it doesn't on http://
On the http:// site, the page doesn't load properly, for example the
Microsoft.com.home and SiteMap links at the top right hand corner are wrong
font and colour (blue instead of white); links at very bottom(Privacy
Statement etc) are also wrong font.

I think I may have mislead you earlier saying I get a blank page, that's not
right, the top left and bottom panels show ok apart from font issues given
above, the main panel shows the "Checking for the latest version" message
but goes no further. It never gets to the Express or Custom install
options.

BTW, I've already tried refreshing and clearing out the cache with no effect

That's not a blank page issue.
Some of the troubleshoothing is easy when only one possiblity but some are
hard.

Some M$ kb ( that's the only one I could find) you may have problem with
ZONE ALARM if you use it.
( had problem myself with outpost firewall that was the ad filter causing me
a problem)
you may also have to register that site in internet options\security\trusted
site.
That's whole issue with httpS is the security layer. It should stop the
security popups.

Could be the unicode ( mostly v4 issue) in IE ,look:
menu\view\encoding\autoselect is on ( unicode maybe selected too).
unicode issue.
Download new controls from
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...code/iuctl.cab and save them
to your desktop. Follow the instructions below to extract the .cab file:
1. Right click on iuctl.cab.
2. Click "Extract to."
3. Indicate the location to which you want the file extracted and click "OK."
4. Go to the location you selected and right click "iuctl.inf."
5. Click "Install."

Some reports say re-registering solved the problem.

net stop wuauserv and regsvr32 wups.dll etc
wuapi.dll,wuaueng.dll,wuaengl.dll,wuauserv.dll,wuc ltui.dll,wups.dll.wuweb.dll,iuengine.dll
