Windows Update Issue - Updates Being Listed For Non-Installed Prog

My issues:

Windows/Microsoft/Automatic Updates continuously show that I need to
download and install KB905474 (Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications) and
KB915597 (Windows Defender Definitions Update).

First of all, I don't want, nor need Genuine Advantage Notifications wasting
my system resources, so it is rather annoying that this update keeps
appearing even after selecting "Don't Notify Me About These Updates Again".

For the second KB, I don't have Windows Defender installed. At all. I have
the installer package itself, but I didn't install the program. No need for
it really. So why does this thing insist on downloading and attempting to
install a definitions file for something not even installed? Bah.

Updates for Microsoft Office 2007, namely SP1 and SP2, showing up, even
though I've never, ever had any form of Office installed on this machine.
This machine is used for entertainment, not productivity. I just don't know
how to explain this one at all. There aren't even any previous Office patches
or files installed on the system (or registry keys for that matter, I
checked). The Office updates issue appeared when I updated this machine to XP
SP3 (both Beta and RTM).

I've tried the suggestions from Microsoft found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902992/
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

All of these updates completely ignore the fact that you select "Don't Show
These Updates Again."

Is there any registry keys or other files I can edit to remedy this
situation for good?

Thank you for your time.

Well, you could try intepreting the WindowsUpdate.log
with verbose logging enabled. <eg> (Ref. KB902093)
And if that's not enough you can supplement whatever logging
you do get by Run... procmon. Note that you would have to
infer which message is which by its length (e.g. as determined
using Notepad with Word Wrap off and Status bar enabled)
and the pattern of WRITE log entries captured by ProcMon.

Ultimately the same way, using WU verbose logging.

Any of the free Office viewer programs installed? ; }

ProcMon might help you figure that out too. ; )

No, none of the free Office viewers are installed. The closest thing I have
is Foxit .pdf viewer, and I use Notepad++ for everything else. I will attempt
to parse the spaghetti mess that resides in that logfile I see quite a few
serivceID and CLSID entries that I will have to investigate, as well as a few
error messages.

A1. Delete the contents of C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download <=this
folder.

A2. Is Windows Defender listed in Add/Remove Programs? Had it ever been
installed?

A3. Did you purchase this machine used?

1. If you did A1 and "hid" these updates at Microsoft Update website after
doing a Custom scan, Automatic Updates should not be offering them anymore.
Are you saying this is not the case?

2. Start | Run | (type) WINVER | OK: What is the complete, second line of
text displayed in the resulting window? (No, you won't be able to copy it
to your clipboard)

3a. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed any build of SP3?

3b. Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

4. Have you ever done a Repair Install or Clean Install of WinXP?

1) Nope, they still appear, all except Windows Defender now, I deleted the
..MSI package from the Windows partition, and it hasn't shown up since.

2) Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206-1234:Service Pack 3)

3a) NOD32 (set to on-demand scanning only). HiJackThis! and Spybot S&D 1.6.
Sygate Pro 5.5 build 2637 (Only have certain options enabled, used for
outbound application filtering at the local host, custom ruleset). This
machine sits behind a Linksys WRT54 GL 1.1, running HyperWRT + Thibor15c
firmware. Custom iptables firewall and rulesets are enabled.

3b) No, this install of WinXP Pro was from my own retail disk.

4) Yes, this was a clean install of both WinXP and SP3. My original install
was WinXP Pro SP3 RC. The original install disk already contained SP2. I
installed Windows, rebooted, then installed all security and stability
patches from Microsoft (I have them on disk as well). Rebooted as necessary,
then installed SP3. Downloaded and applied all patches regarding SP3 from
Microsoft, before installing any programs or other things (including most
drivers).

Were Defender or Office installed prior to the "clean install"? Did you
format your HDD(s) prior to this "clean install"?

Was this an Image made from your retail disk?

Any reason you didn't skip the post-SP2 patches and just install SP3 (and
all post-SP3 updates)?

Did Windows/Microsoft Update offer the Defender and/or Office updates *prior
to the install of SP3*?

Did you download/install SP3 via Windows/Microsoft Update or Automatic
Updates?

Did Windows/Microsoft Update offer the Defender and/or Office updates
immediately after you'd installed SP3?
