I run windows update but no patches ever show up for windows. Belarc advisor
and It.shavlik both say that I am missing critical and regular patches. Any
thoughts
would be appreciated.

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) when posting in a forum or
newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

First thought...
Windows _____, _____ Edition, __-bit with Service Pack _ (if applicable)?

Second thought...
What patches do "Belarc Advisor" and "Shavlik" tell you that you need (list
3 or 4...)?

Last thought...
If this is Windows XP or Vista - have you ever installed BETA service packs?

Start | Run | WINVER | OK: What's the Build number displayed here?

Open Add/Remove Programs: What's the KB number of the most recently
installed "Security Update for Windows XP" and what's the Installation date?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Is Automatic Updates enabled?

Was running mcfee, then Norton, now back to mcfee ( had to load in an older

Did get one sort of error in the update log ( did not know your could do that)

[To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you quote all of the
previous message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.]

Did you install SP3 via Windows Update and are you certain WINVER reports
"version 5.5"?

> ...had to load in an older backup...

Explain, please.

> Was running mcfee, then Norton, now back to mcfee

Norton and McAfee applications are notorious for not uninstalling (or
upgrading) cleanly.

1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...moval_Tool.exe

2. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).

3. Double-click on the file you saved in #1 above to run the utility. Don't
TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot.

4. Now run this McAfee three-step fix:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

NB: After completing Step #1 of this fix (uninstall McAfee), make certain
that the Windows Firewall is enabled! You're "working without a net" now so
don't do ANYTHING else online until you've completed Step #3 of the fix!

5. Manually & repeatedly update the McAfee application until you get a "no
more updates" prompt.

6. Open Internet Explorer (only) to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com |
Select CUSTOM and scan | Install any Critical Security Updates offered
(e.g., KB980182; KB979683). If a Root Certificates update is listed in the
Optional Software updates category on the left-hand side of the scan results
window, install it to take full advantage of IE8's enhanced security.

Whoa. Version 5.5?!

Can you double-check?

Bet "version 5.5" is a typo.
