Windows update just keeps "Checking for latest updates"

When I try to update, it hangs on "Checking for the latest updates for your
computer." The rest of the computer operates fine. The "searching" green
progress meeting keeps cycling. But it NEVER finds anything.

I've tried turning off firewalls and pop-up blockers, but to no avail.

Does anyone know what I can try? I've only found directions for bugs where
an error code shows up, but the update never says there is an error, it just
keeps checking for updates.

Try registering the following:

Click Start, select Run and type (pressing enter after each one and wait for
the
success message):

net.exe stop wuauserv
Press Ok

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll

net.exe start wuauserv

It failed on the very first one.

"The Automatic Updates service could not be stopped."

Definitely a problem. And especially as this was from a clean boot... I had
rebooted since trying to run windows update.

So... I ended up turning off automatic updates and rebooting.

With auto updates off, I was able to run the manual update and it worked.
I'm not sure what the problem was, but there seems to be some connectivity
issues elsewhere, so that may be it. (I also can't watch film clips on
Moviefone... )

So, I was able to update, but I don't know what the real problem was and am
surprised I couldn't find any references anywhere, since there never was an
error code.

Thanks for your help.

Makes it difficult if you don't have at least an error code or something as a
starting point.
Have you checked your Firewall settings? Are you using any web accelerators?
Just a thought.

I've got the same problem and have tried all the above but still no joy.

Running Athlon 64, XP/SP2, Zone-Alarm (turned off), NOD32, Spybot,
PestPatrol, Ad-Aware and just added Windows components IIS, Fax & indexing
from the CD. Ran SP2 again after adding components. Everything was working
before I added IIS, Fax and Indexing...

Tried running WindowsUpdateAgent20-x64.exe as per suggestion but ends with
error: "wusetup.exe is not a valid Win32 application".

Any ideas?

I am having the same problem. I just completed a fresh install of xp
pro. It started happening after I installed office 03. I turned off
automatic updates and rebooted but I am still having the problem. When
I un-install office 03 it works fine again.
