Windows Update just Sits and does nothing

Hey guys-
Just did a clean install of XP. And yes, it's a registered, valid/authentic
copy... I go to windows update, it loads the page, says "Checking for
the latest version of the Windows Update software..." but then it just
sites there and does NOTHING. I have SP1 on this install (trying to get SP2
and other updates here). Yes, I have automatic updates turned on. I do have
a wireless router, but, it never made a difference before. I had this same
version installed, then my machine crashed and I had to wipte the drive, and
reinstall. Could this be the problem- the fact that I am using the same copy
of XP as I did before so it thinks there's 2 versions registered? How do I
fix this?
Thanks!
D

I am also having the same problem when I attempt to go through the Tools
menu, along with other problems with downloading from the web (ie. I cannot
download my anti-virus software updates). I can get to the windows update
page by going through the main windows page, however attempts to install the
updates indicated fails.
I just installed SP2 and that is when my troubles started. Doing a system
restore to a time previous to SP2 reversed the problems, fresh install
brought them back. There is a difference in ability to download different
things among user accounts on my computer as well! I'm pretty sure it's a
setting, or conflict, or something of that nature, but I can't find it!
I could use any advice or suggestions.

take several minutes to check for updates but it does nothing. Any thoughts?

I have the same problem but it goes further than just installing updates to
XP. I called Microsoft support when I was unable to install Streets and
Trips. I had to back out the XP2 and eveything worked. You will find that
any program that uses the Windows Installer can not be removed or updated.

I was told that there was a program on my computer that was causing the
problem but he didn't tell me how to find out which one. I checked the list
of programs that have problems with XP2 but I don't have any of them. I am
nowhere at the moment which is why I checked here.

Did you do a power off, not just a 'restart'?

Same problem, where is Microsoft?? There's a later post that suggests a
conflict with Adobe reader autoupdate. Tried that, no joy. HELP! HELP!

I get the blank page with "Done" if using http://www.windowsupdate.com,
the default URL in my Internet Exploder. Using
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?ln=en-us
works as it should. My firewall notes that the second URL is redirected
from the first, and appears as a block pop-up window. This is all well
and good, except I have yet to find a way to unblock the URL since it is
not controlled by my firewall AFICS.
