Windows Update Just Sits There

I have had this problem for several weeks now. When I click on windows
update, an internet explorer window opens up to the:
"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software..."
screen.

Several of the options on the side bar are grayed out. Is this because I
accidentally clicked No on the microsoft security pop-up window? Or is it
because the Update service is down? I've tried automatic updates but they
are useless.

Any ideas?

I have exactly the same problem - this started after i had to do a complete
re-install - i tried to get SP2 through windos update and it just sits there
"checking for the latest version of updates software"

I also need advice/ help - by the way, updates works fine on my PC at home...

I too have the same problem. I checked my “WindowsUpdate.log” file. There
were no recent errors listed (first one was back in April). I remembered
seeing in this forum were someone suggested checking the Update settings.
According to a Windows XP reference manual, the settings can be found in the
“System Properties” dialog box. To get there click Control Panel under the
Start menu. Click “Performance and Maintenance” and then “System”. The book
says to click the “Automatic Updates” tab in the dialog box, and the book
shows a picture of the dialog box with the tab. To my surprise, my “System
Properties” dialog box has no “Automatic Updates” tab. I’m wondering if
anyone might recognize this as a symptom and associate it with a fix.

Click Start, run
type the following command in the Open box.
"net.exe stop wuauserv" (with out the quotes)
Press O.K.
repeat the same for the following commands:

regsvr32.exe uwapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Restart the machine and try windows update site again.

Thanks for the help! Tried all other fixes - they did not work. The first
time after the fixes I went to windows update
(http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?In=en-us) it
hung for about 10 minutes so I keyed an "s" after the "p" on http and it went
right in and found the updates - note the second time I went to windowsupdate
to check (same internet access) it just poped in without keying the "s" to
http. Thought this was interesting and it might help you!

The commands you provided worked. I've got my "Automatic Updates” tab back
and my computer is once again asking to down-load M.S. Updates.

For other people who may read this, notice that the first "DLL" file was
given as "uwapi.dll". It should be "wuapi.dll".

Thanks, Barry
