Have tried 3 separate times to load this update and receive the error code
0x80242008 each time; also cannot remove failed update from Windows Update
register (this does not appear in add/remove programs)

Did you tick the little box in Add/Remove that says "Show Updates"? Did you
disable your AV's auto scan before installing the updates?

AV=Anti Virus program. Which AV do you have?

Ticking that box only reveals those that are installed and doesn't install
them.

I've got the same problem - Windows XP SP2 German; the KB896688.log says:

3.505: 2005/10/12 23:49:22.074 (local)
3.505:
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\S-1-5-18\bf93e03670e391310a38665326346f18\update\update. exe
(version 6.1.22.4)
3.505: Hotfix started with following command line: /si
/ParentInfo:25590752b9076d489b1adf89b051057d
3.505: Unexpected Error While Executing Line 1 (
Test.IE7InstallBlock.Section ) of PreRequisite
3.515: Das KB896688 Setup wurde abgebrochen.
3.515: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf00d

I tried to use windowsupdate.microsoft.com, the automatic update service
and also downloaded the update file from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Any new ideas?

Thanks,
Tobias

Hi,

same problem here.
I played a lil around with the installer, extracted the files contained and
found the line that is causing this problems inside update\update_SP2GDR.inf
and update\update_SP2QFE.inf. Removing them didn't help since they are beeing
checked against some CRC.

Does anyone know something else? I can't imagine, that we are the only ones,
having this problem. The only thing i can currently think of what will be
different compared to most users is that i have got .NET 2.0 beta installed...

Has anyone reported this problem to microsoft yet? Has anybody any other
idea of what could be causing this...?

greetings,
Jonas

The update fails for me too, but I think I have different error. This is
what I got from the KB90896688.log file-
1.391: 2005/10/13 08:25:01.703 (local)
1.391:
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\S-1-5-18\76033438d40f9746b6ec0e8aaf51e236\update\update. exe (version 6.1.22.4)
1.391: Hotfix started with following command line: /si
/ParentInfo:5e31dd515436bc4f9019e72f53c82a21
2.391: DoInstallation: CleanPFR failed: 0x2
2.391: SetProductTypes: InfProductBuildType=BuildType.Sel
2.406: SetAltOsLoaderPath: No section uses DirId 65701; done.
2.422: Express: 41,956 bytes were downloaded.
2.563: [PatchFilesFromResponseBlob] returning STATUS_READY_TO_INSTALL
2.625: KB905414 installation did not complete.
2.625: Update.exe extended error code = 0xf201

There are also other updates which download, but fail to install as well. I
am in the process of looking up those error logs as well, and may post those
results as well.
I hope someone can help me, as I like to keep all my programs updated as
much as possible.

Oh brother, I found my "problem"... my antivirus program was keeping the
updates from loading. Once I disabled that, they loaded just fine.
