On a computer running Windows XP sp1 I have installed patch KB896727 and
other critical updates from the windows update site. I reboot and go to
windows update and the site states that I still need KB896727. I have done
this multiple times and have even uninstalled and manually installed the
patch by downloading the patch. The patch shows up in add/remove programs so
I'm not sure if it's installed or not?

Download and install the update directly:

Hi Carey
I am running ME and it will not install the KB896727 update. I went to the
site you listed and download it to my desktop. When I opened the download I
came up with an error message "The
IE6.OSP1-KB896727-WINDOWS-2000-XP-X86-ENU.EXE file is linked to missing
export NTDLL.DLL:NtShutdownSystem.
I am about ready to shut my updates off because the KB896727 update never
installs

Pay attention to the OP's OS!

This is why that information detail is critical when reporting problems.
Lurkers and piggybackers may get confused and think that a suggestion
applies to their systems too.

In this case there should have been no confusion.
The patch Carey suggested applies to the OS its title
says it does _only_. Trying to apply it to a different OS
could account for the symptom you are reporting.

Only reason I tried the download is because windows update on my computer
keeps trying to download and install the KB896727 file. I have been haveing
trouble with my computer for over a week now. At one point i could not even
recieve email. I am not sure if IE6 of IE6sp1 has downloaded completely

The link Carey posted was for WinXP and Win2K only!

The Original Poster (OP) here was running WinXP SP1, not WinME, so this is
what you get when you "piggyback" onto someone else's thread and try to
follow advice not tailored to your situation.

The link Carey posted was for WinXP and Win2K users *only*. Never assume
advice given to others applies to you. When posting to the newsgroups,
always begin a new thread about *your* problem.

What happens when you go to Windows Update and attempt to install KB896727?
Is IE6 SP1 installed?

What trouble have you been having with your computer recently?

In the original post he is having the same problem with the KB896727 update
that I am having and was having for over a week before I even came into this
chat. My auto update still tries to install the KB896727. Every time it tries
to install it, it freezes. After talking with the support people I am not
even sure if KB896727 is to go on my computer. If it is not to go on ME why
does my auto upgrade try to put it on.

You may have the same problem but you're not running the same machine,
Screwy.

KB896727 applies to WinME machines but it's *only* available for WinME
machines via Windows Update. The file obtained using the link Carey posted
earlier may *only* be used on WinXP and Win2K machines running IE6 SP1.

In Windows Explorer, search for (WinKey+F) this file: BROWSEUI.DLL. If it's
version 6.0.2800.1692, you already have KB896727 installed.

Have you tried temporarily disabling your antivirus application, closing
*all* other windows and then going to Windows Update
(http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) to install KB896727 and any other
Critical Updates? If the problem persists, at what point does it "freeze",
during the download, during installation?

As I asked in my other reply to you, what other problems have you been
having with the machine recently?

My version is 6.0.2800.1622
Yes I have tried disabling my antivirus
It freezes after it download addition files and during install of browser
components.
When I download without going through the autodownload it freezes on install.
After talking with Microsoft support there was a couple of days i could not
get email or open files.
When I went to control panel it would say I had 35 items but would not show
the icons.
At this point it is operating just still saids I need the updates everytime
i turn on the computer.
