Windows Update KB899591 & KB899587

I downloaded these updates plus 5 more on my notebook and I could not use
Outlook Express. It would give me errors and I could not send or receive
emails. I did a system restore and outlook express worked.

I just downloaded the same 7 updates to my mainframe computer and it
happened. I could not use my Outlook Express. This time instead of doing a
system restore, I started deleting the updates one at a time. The first was
KB899591 and it said that KB899587 would not work if I deleted this one. So I
deleted both. I had to go no further because when I restarted my computer,
Outlook Express was working again.

Since one would not work without the other, I do not know which one caused
my problem.

What was in these updates that would cause my outlook express to stop working?

I now have to keep these updates in front of me, so I do not update them
again in error.

Any ideas?

Win XP Home Ed, SP2, Internet Explorer 6.

Both of these updates required a restart after the install phase completed. Did you in fact logoff & restart Windows?

Of course. They downloaded yesterday. When I went on today to use outlook
express it would not work. Now that I deleted them, it is working.

Of the 2 updates you've focused on, it would have to have been KB899587 which might have caused your problem.
Look at your Windows folder and see if you have a log file KB899587.log ?

(the fix in KB899591 was for Remote Desktop protocol & the file updated is not used by O.E.)

They installed as I was logging off and said do not sign off, let it do its
thing. I did. The next morning when I logged on, outlook did not work. I did
the same thing with my notebook. I always do a restart. Yet both had the same
problem.

(Re)Install all Critical Updates. If you cannot send/receive with OE, post
any errors you're receiving in their entirety.

Crystal Ball© sez:

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<paste>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
