Toktok,
I have a similar problem except that my nemisis is the "Cumulative Security
Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009)" for WinME.
I've done both manual and automatic install and I get nearly the same
situation with the same end result. That is, it appears to install itself
(or download and install itself, if via the web page.) Then, when I go to
the internet (after rebooting; OR, on the next day, if I haven't rebooted)
the "Windows Update" site or the "Windows Update" manager tells me that I
need to install the same OE6 SP1 -- AGAIN!
Also, I've been through a situation like this, at least once before (that I
can recall), but can't quite remember what the solution to this is. It seems
that, what I do remember (from Microsoft's recomendations) is something about
deleting (or moving to somewhere safe) the folder(s) that deal with updates,
such as the hidden "WindowsUpdate" folder in the "Program Files" folder
and/or deleting (or (again) moving to somewhere safe) some "update" files in
the "Windows" folder. Can't quite remember whether or not they had me scrub
a couple of "data" entries in the "Registry" too.
NOTE: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, DO NOT take the (sketchy, at best) scenarios
that I've painted above as a solution and start deleting stuff (unless you
are absolutely sure that you can do so without "hosing Windows or the
Registry".) It is ONLY my intent here to indicate that:
1) I have a similar problem;
2) that I am still looking for (or trying to remember) the solution; and,
3) that when I find it (or remember it); I will both:
A) apply it to my current situation and
B) shoot the info by you for YOUR perusal.
Until then, all the best to you in finding an answer.
Cordially,
Stormlance
