Over the past week, i have installed and removed the latest windows updates 3
different times to narrow down the cause of the problem. After installing
the updates issued last week (week of April 17), when I tried to run any of
my office products (word, excel, etc..), the program would freeze up and go
into the "not responding" state everytime I tried to open a file and select a
folder on my hard drive. So I removed the updates and installed them one by
one, after each time checking word to see if it crashed. The update
responsible for crash all the office products, was KB908531. Just to note,
that I tried this on office XP and I just recently upgraded to office 2003,
and the crash occured on both versions. I dont know who to report this to,
but I thought that the people at microsoft should know of this problem. For
the time being, I hope that KB908531 is not a mandatory update for security
purposes, as I'm not using it until this problem is fixed.

If you are having problems subsequent to update 908531

Please see Aumha.net article for some suggestions and links to relevant articles.

Bear in mind there is no "single" solution that fits everybody's problems

Also, Microsoft will have a selected re-release of this update (for systems that have known problems or for systems that do not yet have this update.

Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY.
There is no charge for support calls that are associated with security updates.

• International customers can receive support from their local Microsoft subsidiaries.
There is no charge for support that is associated with security updates.

Chris - I've had to do the same thing 3 or 4 times. I hope they fix it soon.
I had to turn off my automatic updates until the issue is fixed. Catherine

I am having the exact problem. I restore my computer to a date before the
updates were installed, unfortunately, Windows keeps automatically installing
the updates even after I have chosen the option not to download the updates.
I spoke to someone at 1-866-PCSAFETY and they gave me another number to call
(not available for another three hours for me) and seemed to think that it
might be an issue with HP computers. Hope this gets figured out soon!

Why not read the response by Maurice in this thread?
Surely it must be close to the 25th-Apr everywhere by now?

I use Dell laptop. We are both having SAME problems in several different
areas using windows processes most having been mentiond here. My automatic
update was done 4/13/06. Is microsoft sending an automatic update to CORRECT
the glitches???

Nope - not an HP problem. Same problems on Dell & Gateway.

I have not yet removed the KB908531 automatic update (4/13/06) which is
wreaking havoc for me & my neighbor having same problems. Do I need to remove
it before installing the REVISED KB908531 due out today? Or will microsoft
send an automatic upate FIX for this??? (So glad to find your info )

The fix has already been released today. It will be made available to your
PC if your PC is detected to have HP Share-to-Web software installed, or an
nVidia video driver version in the range 60.00 to 64.99.

Since it can take several days before Automatic Update does its stuff, you
might like to try a manual Windows Update to get the fixed version.
