KB914693 is not an update.
==========================
Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot Tea Timer,
AVG Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before
attempting to install the update(s). If you disable the third-party
firewall, make certain that you enable the Windows Firewall!

Hello blackbaz,

Do a manual visit to Windows Update with Internet Explorer.

[ Start > Windows Update or open IE, click Tools, Windows Update ]

When the installations fail, close IE.

Now go to Start > Run > type in

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter

Please post the last 30 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate.log

From the microsoft update site I get
"checking for the latest updates for your computer"
and the failed file is
"Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB941693)" pasted from failed
file list

[Thread history:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...7a635dbc08558]

So it's KB941693, not KB914693 as referenced in your post's subject. Thanks
for clearing it up. (Don't worry, we all make unfortunate typos.)

>>> windows update that keeps trying to dounload and install [KB941693] AND
>>> FAILS. Could I have corrupted some files on my computer as I had to do a
>>> windows repair from my winxp home cd??

=> If KB941693 is the only update that's been *offered* by Windows Update
since you did the Repair Install, see...

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

=> If KB941693 is the only update that's *failed to install* since you did
the Repair Install, you have two choices:

1. Post the contents of %windir%\kb941693.log (typically
C:\Windows\kb941693) in a reply to this thread; or

2. Start a free Windows Update support incident request:
