Windows Update keeps hanging on certain fixes

Using XP Home SP1 (and now SP2), I have had the exact same problem
occur three times with KB873333, KB894391 and KB902400.

The installer will start fine and hang when attempting to install any
of these three updates. The hard drive will buzz every second or so
for about 20-30 minutes and completely bog down the computer from doing
anything else.

Eventually, it says the installation took place, but my record of
downloads at update.microsoft.com shows a status of "Cancelled". And
so, it tries to have me install that same fix time after time after
time.

I did just find out that these three fixes all seem to be related (e.g.
873333 was superseded by 902400). But I don't understand anything
beyond that.
