Installed from my CD XPpro/SP2 and Windows update upodated to SP3 with no
problem. But then I tried to use update to install other items such as Media
11 or .net Framework and each time got a message these items were not
installed.

After a lengthy search I finally found KB 943144 (Updates are not installed
successfully from Windows update) which offers 2 fixes, the first of which
worked.

My question is: Why has Microsoft created an updater where a registry item
associated with Wups2.dll is missing?
