Windows Update Log Empty

When I try to use automatic updates the files appear to download but
installation fails without populating udate history. I looked at my Windows
Update.log and there are only two entries from 2004 -

2004-03-31 18:15:26 02:15:26 Success IUCTL Starting
2004-03-31 18:15:26 02:15:26 Success IUCTL Shutting down

I'm running XP MC with SP2 manually installed.

Any ideas?

You might be reading - %windir%\windows update.log

and not

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Note there is no space between windowsupdate in the 2nd one.
