I am having the same problem listed in these posts (files required to....etc)
I have performed all the steps I could find in these postings as well as
other sites and still no joy. However, at one point I was directed to
re-install the wuauserv and when I did I got the following message:

"wuauserv.dll was loaded but the dllRegisterServer entry point was not found"

Seems like this might be a good clue although I haven't found anything
helpful relating to this message:

Running XP - SP2/IE7/ all attempts to re-register .dlls appeared successful
but the problem remains.

Could be that the .dll is damaged. There should be a backup of it in
WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
Delete the copy in system32 and copy the one in dllcache to the system32
folder. Now see if it will reregister.

I did as you suggested.
I then did a:
net stop wuaserv
regsvr32 wuauserv.dll and got the same error
"wuauserv.dll was loaded but the dllRegisterServer entry point was not found"

Any other ideas ?

Try reregistering it with the Automatic Update service still running.
If no joy, right click wuauserv.dll, choose Properties, then click the
Version tab and post back with the version number, please.

Was SP2 applied to the system or did it come already included on the XP CD ?

Are you sure the stop worked? E.g. you could check with

tasklist /svc /fi "Modules eq wuauserv.dll"

Try doing it during a safe boot. In that case the service won't be started
so the net stop command would be redundant and fail but more importantly
other programs which might be interfering with that service might also not
be present.

Alternatively, you could use DependencyWalker's Profiler feature
to get a trace of the dependent modules when that command is executed.
Sometimes that uncovers missing modules or other modules which
also need to be re-registered.

Good luck
