I had to repair my XP installation from the CD, I had my XP professional
updated to current support with IE7 installed, but after the CD pair I am
back to IE6 and windows update selects several fixes are required. here is an
example of the first few:
Security Update for Windows XP (KB913446)
Security Update for Windows Media Player 9 (KB911565)
Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP (KB923694)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB899588)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB912919)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB925486)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (KB931768)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB921398)

however, the update process ends with all "not installed". The tail of the
Windows Update log is included below with the last fix selected and a fatal
error.

I found a working solution elsewhere in the list, Thanks for listening though.

After posting I found similar references, I reinstalled
WindowUpdateAgent30-x86.exe from the command line with the /wuforce option,
and then made sure the com services are started. Windows update is working as
expected, I retrieved and applied the 80 updates that where outstanding after
my disk repair.

Thanks again for this discussion group.

This looks like the problem I am having. Can you tell me how to perform the
reinstall of WindowUpdateAgent30-x86.exe from the command line with the
/wuforce option and start the com services? Thanks.

One of the regulars (MowGreen) posted these links as the download location
for the windows update agent:

For 32 bit [x86] Windows OS' [Win2K, WS 2003, XP, Vista]
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

For 64 bit [x64]
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x64.exe

Save the file to a local directory then use the command prompt to locate the
exec and run it from the command line with the /wuforce option. that is if
you download it to a directory named c:\ftp, open the command window enter:
> CD \ftp

then enter
> WindowsUpdateAgent30-x32.exe /wuforce

Also be sure to check in control panel->administrative tools->services to be
sure COM+ System Applications is started.

Hope that helps,
Jim

Jim,
Thanks for the information. COM+ System Applications was shown in
Control Panel as "started". When I ran <WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe>, I got
a message "Install is not needed since Windows Update Agent is already
installed". This is a similar result I got when following instructions in an
E-mail from a Microsoft Tech Support agent after I contacted MS Windows
Update Support on the MS website. Unfortunately, the agent seems to have
vanished from the Earth, as she has not replied to my follow-up E-mails
(which she requested I send).
I think the problem may be that the Windows Update Agent that was
installed on my computer during my full system recovery may have been
corrupted, and any subsequent attempts to reinstall the Windows Update Agent
recognize it is already there and don't go further. An unpalatable option is
for me to try the full recovery again, which means another two+ days of
reinstalling all of my software and network connections.
I have tried to find out how to remove the current Windows Update
Agent, but all I have found so far is a $39.95 program "XPlite" and if
removing and reinstalling Windows Update Agent does not take care of the
problem then I'm out 40 bucks and back where I started.
I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!

Barry

This solution worked for me as well, make sure you are running
WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe with

/WUFORCE command-line parameter or else it won't install claiming it's
already there. Definitely don't waste money on a 3rd-party product to fix
this issue.

Worst case call Microsoft they provide free support tickets on windowsupdate
issues. (it might be email-only but they will work hard to help you resolve
the issue)

Thanks for the information. I had forgotten to use the /WUFORCE parameter
the first time I executed the file but, when I realized my error and added
the parameter, the next time everything worked out fine.

This forum had turned out to be far more useful than the Microsoft Support.
I have yet to receive a reply from the Microsoft Support person after one
week - and she asked me to reply!

I was having this same issue and have been working for two days to try and
resolve it. I looks all over Microsoft's site and many other forums and
nothing worked. I'm so glad I was able to find this post because your
suggestions worked like a charm. Thanks!

Thought I would add to thread. I've been plagued by this same issue. I've
been growling in frustration all day.

I found a post (in the same search I found this one) from a WSUS forum from
2005 addressing problems with using the update site. This was their
suggestion, which I tried and it worked. (Slightly modified for today's
paths.)

Stop Automatic Updates Service

regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuweb.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wups2.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wups.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuapi.dll

Then restart the Automatic Updates service.

I suspect the /WUFORCE switch does pretty much the same thing. If
reregistering didn't do the job then the /WUFORCE was my next step. I always
like to avoid a reinstall where possible.
