For the last 4 days everytime I boot up XP Home the auto update starts up and
wants to download media player 11, which I downloaded already doing a manual
windows update...it driving me nuts. If I look at my update history on the MS
site there are pages of succesful downloads of the product.

Also after I download the via manual or auto, MP11 works fine. Once I reboot
no go and I get the following error in a Windows Media Player pop up

"The file wmplayer.exe has a version number of 11.0.5721.5145 where
9.0.0.4503 was expected. Windows Media Player is not installed properly and
must be reinstalled. Do you want to insall the player from the Microsoft Web
Site ... Yes or No?

If I reply Yes i goes and down loads the player etc and then the whole cycle
starts again. Spybot, AVG, ADAWARE, of MS Mal tool reomver show nothing.

I have lost count how many time I have installed this &*&@# MP11. Evrytime I
reboot I just have re-install it again...just one big circle... I have now
disabled AUTO update as it wasting my d/l quota, plus most of the time there
is Zero KB to down load but MS Update still wants to do it.

I had hoped that reinstalling Windows Media Player 11 and then applying the
update would have fixed the problem.
So when you downloaded Windows Media Player 11 (the original file) and
reinstalled it and then tried to apply the patch, the problem persisted?

Unfortunately if nothing is working, then the only thing left is to
communicate with MS.
