I too have this problem as reported by apparently many others. I have
KB917283 downloaded on my desktop as well as my laptop. It will not install
on either computer. I don't see the error message number, but I get the
message "Updates were unable to be successfully installed..."

I have this update downloaded as well, and it always fails to install. The
only message I've had other than the failure message was a Windows File
Protection warning that the update was installing unknown versions and
therefore File Protection was replacing them back to the originals.

The error code I get is
Error Code: 0x643

However, I don't know whether to trust the update, or how to disable File
Protection. I find it a little disconcerting when Windows' own security
systems can't agree with each other.

This fix will not install on top of beta versions of .NET Framework 2.0. It
will normally only install on the true release. So much depends on how your
PC first acquired its copy of .NET Framework 2.0. If you happen to know,
please let us know.

The following is a revised version of an earlier post by TKang:

Note:
a. Some ATI VGA users may need to disable/exit the Catalyst Control Center
(which uses .NET) before updating the framework.
b. Users of Windows Live OneCare must disable that application before
removing or updating the Framework.

1: Turn automatic updates off.

2: Download .NET 2.0 (for 32-Bit) at this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

OR

2a: Download .NET 2.0 (for 64-Bit) at this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

3: Use control panel Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Microsoft .NET
Framework, Version 2.0 and reboot. Do not touch .NET Framework 1.1.

3a: see note below at step 7.

4: Install Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (for 32-bit: dotnetfx.exe
3/22/2006) or (for 64-bit: NetFx64.exe 3/30/2006) and reboot.

5: Then run MS Update (and install KB917283) then reboot.

6: Turn automatic updates on (assuming that is your preference).

7. If this procedure failed to allow update 917283 to work, then repeat the
procedure, adding the following at step 3a:
Download http://astebner.sts.winisp.net/Tools...eanup_tool.zip and
unzip it. Run the enclosed application, and select to clean up .NET
Framework 2.0. Now continue above from step 4.

I used this procedure, and it fixed my problem on both my desktop as well as
my laptop. I did not have to run step 7 (3A).
I do not know specifically when .NET Framework 2.0 was installed, but I kind
of remember something related to .NET Framework happening on both my
computers late last summer or early fall.
Thank you for your help.

Thanks very much for this, it worked fine for me after uninstalling and
reinstalling the NET 2.0 Framework.

As for where I obtained the Framework, I believe it came with Visual Studio
2005.

Ah, an early developers' version. That would explain the source of this
problem.

Jeff,

A quick question - can you tell me what "flavor" or SKU of Visual Studio
2005 you are using (Professional/Enterprise/etc)? Also can you tell me if you
had the .Net Framework 2.0 (beta) installed on your PC when you ran into this
problem ?

Thanks,
Jamshed

Not a clue. Did you run the cleanup utility?
