When i try to run Windows Update, is starts teh 'Windows is looking for
udpates', the bar starts scrolling, and never finishes. No error messages are
received.
The PC is new, with XP SP2 installed, with a broadband connection. I have
scanned my PC for viruses using Norton and Sbybot, with no problems found,
and tried Update with both disabled. No difference.
I have trapped the last lines from Winupdate.log, and attached below. The
content seems similar after every failure. Any ideas?

Try to do this & check

type regsvr32.notlong.com in the address bar in the internet explorer
it would give you an option to run
runn & it would register some 22 files click ok for all files
now try to perform windows update

If that doesn't help then
start->run>type cmd <enter>
in command prompt
type the following commands
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuauserv.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

"Paul w",

Your update has bad meta data. Please try to download just one update this
time, and report back the results.

"jomamoto",

Are you sure your behavior is exactly the same? Please check your
WindowsUpdate.log and see if you encounter error 8024001D.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Can't download any updates. I never get past 'Searching for updates' window,
and so never reach the point where i can select an update. Or have i
misunderstood? Also looked as Winupdate again. No instances of the error
8024001D in the log at all. After each failure keep seeing the same "Update
is missing metadata (00000B00), hr=8024001D" line in the log, as per my
original log sample below.

Also looking at suggestion from "Diva". Tried first step but no difference
so far.

NB: Been away for few days, hence delayed reply.

So what do you think hr=8024001D is then, if not an "instance of the error"? <VBSEG>

You can find more of what Diva found by searching. ;o

http://groups-beta.google.com/groups....windowsupdate

(Google Groups search for
"missing metadata" log group:microsoft.public.windowsupdate
)

In one of the 3 articles that finds (including yours) you can find
an example where a poster has apparently done his own search
and found these instructions from Torgeir Bakken (MVP) which
in a way synthesize the knowledge gained from the other thread
(mostly from Wei Wu [MSFT]).

Robert,
Can't say much about my ability to find an error code!.

However went to the google article you recommened (written by Torgeir
Bakken) and worked through the suggested changes, restarting the PC after
every one. Eventually found the one the worked for me - renaming the '\Data
Store' folder to '\Data Store.old' to force WinUpdate to create a new one.
Instant success. Simple solution, just hard going to work it out.

Many thanks for your help.
