Windows Update never finishes checking ...

When I go to Windows Update and click either Express or Custom, I get the
messeage "Checking for the latest updates for your computer..." and the
bouncing green bar, but it goes no further. This behaviour started ~2 weeks
ago. System is Win2k. Based on other threads, I verifed BITS is on (was off
originally) & RPC started.

Thanks,
Tom

The tail of the WinUpdate.log follows (~ a dozen checks in the SETUP section
were marked "Update not required)(note that the scan was running for > 5
minutes, but the logging stopped after 6 sec):

If you're using/running any kind of download helper/accelerator, or any "ad-blocking" utility program....(Adshield being only 1 of many) disable & exit that program ---- when accessing Windows Update.

If you have Netsonic on your computer, uninstall it.

Disable the options "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic configuration script."
To do this:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
3. Click "Connections," and then click "LAN Settings."
4. Make sure the check boxes for "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic configuration script" are not selected.

Try to access the Windows Update site again.

Also, verify that you can connect to SSL-enabled Web sites (sites that start with https://).

Most online retailers use SSL (Secure Socket Layer) sites during the checkout/payment process. If you've connected to one of these sites in the past then chances are that SSL is working correctly on your computer. You can also test your ability to connect to SSL sites using a SSL test site like this:

https://www.stanford.edu/group/idg/l...cure/test.html

If you cannot connect to SSL sites then the Windows Update scan will not work. Make sure that the SSL port (port 443) is open on your network.

Thanks to both Maurice N and TauArian. I did Maurice's suggestions first and
then TauArun's. The pair worked but I haven't gone back and tried undoing the
Connections settings to see if that was really an issue or not. Anyway all is
well now.
Thanks.
